Ride the Rockies – day 1

The first day was through the Colorado National Monument.  The steep climb was about 8 miles, then the rest of the climb was 8.5 miles.  The view from the top was spectacular and the edge of the road was frightening as it was straight down a longgggg ways.  There was rain predicted so Nicole and I went as fast as we could on the down hill; consequently we missed the rain and hail – horray!  The total miles were 47.5 which included riding back to the motel.  The overall average speed was 14.6 mph –  the climb was very slow but the downhill was fun.  Tomorrow is the toughest day with 94 miles and almost 11,000 feet to the top – more on that tomorrow.
